Biography of Maud Hart Lovelace. The Companion begins by describing the time period shortly before that in which the first book, Betsy-Tacy, is set - the years 1883 to 1896. The Companion chapters then cover, one by one, each of the Betsy-Tacy books, representing Lovelace's childhood (starting in 1897), taking her through high school, a trip to Europe before the World War I, and to the early years of her marriage in Minneapolis, Minnesota to Delos Lovelace. The last two chapters detail Lovelace's later adult life and writing career. The Companion discusses similarities between the fictional Betsy and the real Maud. 404 photographs and illustrations.

A Visual Collection of Letters Written by Maud Hart Lovelace

This digital collection of letters was assembled to provide insight into the life of Lovelace when she wrote the Betsy-Tacy series. Her letters, all addressed to Thomas Edwards, illustrate the author's attention to historical accuracy as she recalls her childhood memories of Mankato. Edwards, whose pen name was Willie Putt, was the author of the Betsy-Tacy book reviews written for the Mankato Free Press from 1940 - 1958. Thomas Edwards writes in one of his reviews, "Maud Hart Lovelace is in the process of becoming one of the best accepted of contemporary writers in the field of youth reading." Letters written by Lovelace to Edwards are from the private collection of the Edwards family. A companion booklet is included with the CD and is a collection of the transcribed Free Press book reviews. Includes reviews written from 1940 - 1958. 18 pp., Spiral bound. As a young girl Maud was fascinated by Mary Pitcher's Indian stories and mentions it often in the Betsy-Tacy books. The character of /Grandma Slade/ was based on Mary Warren Pitcher. Mary was the grandmother of Tom Fox, the character of Tom Slade. Mrs. Pitcher was one of Mankato's first pioneer settlers. Her pioneer accounts are recorded in the Old Settlers books and were transcribed for this booklet.
