Set in Minnesota in the 1860s, The Black Angels is the name given to a family who are passionate about singing. These musical prodigies decide to organize a concert troupe and start out with a covered wagon to tour the country and make their fortunes.

The Black Angels was first published in 1926. This was Maud Hart Lovelace's first published novel. Lovelace wrote, "As with all my historical novels, I did for this one a very thorough research job, reading newspapers, magazines, and memoirs of the period, as well as working in Historical Societies and Museums to check costumes, furniture, popular music and so on. This procedure continued, in fact, even with the Betsy-Tacy books. For stories of a period after the turn of the century, Sears Roebuck Catalogs were helpful.”

Young Deedee DuGay knew everyone at Fort Snelling in the 1830s. Strong, independent, and quick witted, she lived with her large family in a snug cabin on the fort's military reservation; her older brothers were voyageurs. On an island in the Mississippi, near yet remote, lived Jasper Page, the leading fur trader in the territory. Elegant, compassionate, and fair in his dealings, he was respected by all. And although he was far above her social class, Deedee dared to love him. Their story is a rich and romantic re-creation of an important time in Minnesota's history.

Maud Hart Lovelace, author of the popular Betsy-Tacy books, first published this book in 1929. A new introduction to this reprint edition by Rhoda R. Gilman, describes Lovelace's meticulous research for this novel and compares the fictional Jasper Page to Henry H. Sibley, fur trader and first governor of Minnesota, upon whom the character was based.
